Page 98 Rajaratnam plays tennis and squash and swims. Stark also turns to sports during his free time. Henry has exhibited his interest in sports by owning several baseball teams over the years, including his January 1999 purchase of the Florida Marlins. A number of managers focus on charity work. For example, Cooperman has set up an educational foundation and serves on many boards. Och is chairman of the Wall Street division of the United Jewish Appeal (UJA) and is on the board of City Harvest. Wilcox has been instrumental in bringing classical music to areas where it may not otherwise be heard such as rural North Carolina or a boys' correctional facility in Kansas. Singer runs a family foundation. Public issue reform is important for a few of the managers. Kovner has spent time and money on educational reform. Singer's efforts are in the social policy area. Sussman's passion is the environment—preventing the paper industry from cutting down more trees in Maine. He also devotes considerable resources and efforts to pure science at the Weitzmann Institute in Israel, where he recently established a building for environmental sciences. Politics was named less frequently. Henry and Sussman have been big Democratic campaign contributors. Music is an outlet for a few of the managers. Kovner plays the piano daily, and Henry, who earlier in his life had been a bassist, has a recording studio. Wilcox plays rock guitar in a band. Rajaratnam likes to travel with the stated objective of visiting two new countries per year. Kovner also collects rare books and recently provided the structure to publish the only Bible illustrated by a single artist in the twentieth century. DIFFERENCESOn some issues, no similarities exist. Age was one. Varying styles and strategies was another. The amount of stock market exposure and the ways that is hedged differed considerably. Portfolio composition varied, including the emphasis on the U.S. markets, macro trading, technology, and private equity. The criteria required for taking a trade differed widely. |
