He has donated considerable money and resources, and has a full-time lobby person in Maine where he has a vacation home.

Sussman, a liberal Democrat, has supported President Clinton in the past and Al Gore in 2000. Throughout the years, he has supported Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman.

Sussman also finances and supports pure science research at the Weizmann Institute in Israel. He has chaired the American fund-raising arm and is a deputy chairman of the international board of governors. In 1996, he established the Sussman Family Building for Environmental Sciences on the Weizmann campus. He is also a trustee of Carnegie Hall and is cochair of the board of trustees for the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in New York.
