After graduating from Harvard Law School in 1969, Paul Singer practiced law at two top New York City law firms, but he became interested in investing as a hobby. "I was passionate about investing. It was an obsessive hobby. I found it fun to study the relationships. It was interesting, like a game or a puzzle." Elliott Associates—taken after his middle name—was formed in 1977; initial assets were from friends and family. His goal was not to lose money.
