Traders did not want other market makers to perceive them as being "uncooperative," "unethical," or "unprofessional'' because that perception could have resulted in their losing access to their trader networks. Market makers would refrain from sharing information with or offering trading opportunities to those market makers who failed to comply with the "professional" trading practices discussed herein. Exclusion of market makers who did not follow these practices served to deter competition in the Nasdaq market.
