The real issue is to whom do the markets belong and do people have the right to interact in the market without the impediments deemed necessary by the industry? DAET represents public participation in the Nasdaq market in an unfettered fashion. The market makers realized that SOES was the beginning of public intrusion and did everything in their power to eliminate the DAET/SOES encroachment onto their private domain.
This was a classic epic struggle. A David and Goliath fight. A kid from Brooklyn takes on the good old boy, Ivy League, Wharton, Harvard, Princeton rep tie, button down collar, straw hat network. In this corner, weighing 203 pounds (I'm still on a diet), is Harvey Houtkin. In the other corner is the wealth, influence, and power structure of the united elite.
The entrenched defenders always have an advantage over the attackers. The defenders of the status quo use all of their advantages against the newcomers whom they bill as Vandal destroyers of the civilized infrastructure.
When I was fighting with the market makers, I found out why all spiral staircases in old castles were built curving to the right. As the entrenched defenders of the establishment were defending the high ground on the upper stairs, right-handed defenders could lift their swords over their heads for massive downstroke blows while the heathen attackers on the bottom stairs would be blocked from strong sword strokes by the upper ceiling of the spiral staircase. Thus, the infrastructure is usually designed to protect those with already vested interests.
I was the outsider. Right was on my side and I knew that I had to win. As Winston Churchill said, or should have said if he didn't, "In the greatest adversity lies the seed of highest achievement."
My decision to take on the industry with the intent to reform it was not an easy one for me to make. This was the worst time in my life from both a personal and financial
